(CNN) — Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez scored for the first time since returning from his ban for racially abusing a fellow player as Liverpool moved into the last eight of the English FA Cup with a 6-1 win over Brighton.

Suarez grabbed the final goal in Liverpool’s rout of second tier Brighton, in his third game back after serving an eight-match ban for aiming a racial slur at Manchester United’s Patrice Evra, but only after he had missed a penalty that he was urged to take by manager Kenny Dalglish.

With Liverpool 5-1 up, the Scot insisted Suarez step up to take the penalty but his effort from 12 yards was saved by Brighton keeper Peter Brezovan.

Dalglish later admitted to ESPN: “That was a bad decision.

Defender Martin Skrtel put Liverpool ahead early in the game with a header from Steven Gerrard’s corner but a free kick from Kazenga Lua Lua brought Brighton — ninth in England’s second tier — level.

But Liverpool went in front just before half time when Liam Bridcutt put the ball into his own net. Carroll got his sixth of the season from Stewart Downing’s cross before the hapless Bridcutt diverted a Gerrard cross past Brezovan.

Lewis Dunk then scored Brighton’s third own goal,and five minutes after his penalty miss Suarez finished from Carroll’s nod down to make it six. Liverpool will face Stoke in the quarterfinals.

Tottenham, third in the English Premier League, were held to a goalless draw by Stevenage, who are 46 places below their opponents in the football league.

Louis Saha came closest to breaking the deadlock for the top flight side, but his goal was ruled out as teammate Scott Parker was in an offisde position as the ball crossed the line.

The two will replay the game at White Hart Lane in ten days time and the winner will take on Bolton.

Sunday’s early tie saw Premier League Stoke City beat fourth-tier Crawley Town 2-0, despite playing more than 70 minutes with ten men.

Rory Delap was sent off for a lunge on David Hunt but a penalty from Jonathan Walters and a header from England striker Peter Crouch saw Stoke through to face Liverpool.

The other two ties see Chelsea or Birmingham play Leicester, while Everton will host Sunderland in an all Premier League clash.

(Financial Times) — A “strictly confidential” report on Greece’s debt projections prepared for eurozone finance ministers reveals Athens’ rescue programme is way off track and suggests the Greek government may need another bail-out once a second rescue — set to be agreed on Monday night — runs out.

The 10-page debt sustainability analysis, distributed to eurozone officials last week but obtained by the Financial Times on Monday night, found that even under the most optimistic scenario, the austerity measures being imposed on Athens risk a recession so deep that Greece will not be able to climb out of the debt hole over the course of a new three-year, ?170bn bail-out.

It warned that two of the new bail-out’s main principles might be self-defeating. Forcing austerity on Greece could cause debt levels to rise by severely weakening the economy while its ?200bn debt restructuring could prevent Greece from ever returning to the financial markets by scaring off future private investors.

“Prolonged financial support on appropriate terms by the official sector may be necessary,” the report said.

The report made clear why the fight over the new Greek bail-out has been so intense. A German-led group of creditor countries — including the Netherlands and Finland — has expressed extreme reluctance to go through with the deal since they received the report.

A “tailored downside scenario” in the report suggests Greek debt could fall far more slowly than hoped, to only 160 per cent of economic output by 2020 — well below the target of 120 per cent set by the International Monetary Fund. Under such a scenario, Greece would need about ?245bn in bail-out aid, far more than the ?170bn under the “baseline” projections eurozone ministers were using in all-night negotiations in Brussels on Monday.

“The Greek authorities may not be able to deliver structural reforms and policy adjustments at the pace envisioned in the baseline,” the pessimistic scenario warned. “Greater wage flexibility may in practice be resisted by economic agents; product and service market liberalisation may continue to be plagued by strong opposition from vested interests; and business environment reforms may also remain bogged down in bureaucratic delays.”

Even under a more favourable scenario, Greece could need an additional ?50bn by the end of the decade on top of the ?136bn in new funds until 2014 being debated by finance ministers on Monday night. That “baseline” scenario includes projections that the Greek economy stops shrinking next year and returns to 2.3 per cent growth in 2014.

Details of what has gone off course in the report are long and daunting. A recapitalisation of Greek banks, originally projected to cost ?30bn, will now cost ?50bn. A Greek privatisation plan, originally to raise ?50bn, will now be delayed by five years and bring in only ?30bn by 2020.

The report also paints a troubling outlook for the debt restructuring, expected to begin this week. The deal involves a debt swap, where private investors trade in existing Greek bonds for a package that includes ?30bn in bonds issued by the eurozone’s rescue fund and ?70bn in new, long-term Greek bonds.

The analysis says the swap, co-financed by Greece and the rescue fund, essentially creates a class of privileged investors who will chase off new bond investors when Greece attempts to return to the bond market.

“It is now uncertain whether market access can be restored in the immediate post-programme years,” the report warned.

(CNN) — A Kenyan chief in a town far from the bustling capital foiled a predawn robbery recently using Twitter, highlighting the far-reaching effects of social media in areas that don’t have access to the Internet.

Chief Francis Kariuki said he got a call in the dead of the night that thieves had broken into a neighbor’s house.

He turned to Twitter, which allows users to send messages in 140 characters or less, to reach his community instantly.

“Thieves in Kelven’s living room, let’s help him out please,” he tweeted in Swahili, the local language.

Local residents, who subscribe to his tweets through a free text messaging service, jumped into action. They surrounded the house, sending the thugs fleeing into the night.

He later sent a message thanking the community in his town of Lanet Umoja for coming out.

While Twitter has been associated with bolstering uprisings and anti-government protests in Africa, its use is expanding in the continent, with communities in remote areas tailoring the global service and making it work for local audiences.

In the town 100 miles from Nairobi, a majority of residents don’t have access to computers, the Internet or smart phones. The sporadic cyber cafes strewn across the landscape charge for Internet access.

However, almost every household has a cell phone and text messages are a major form of communication in the nation.

“Every time we have barazas (meetings) twice a month, I make attendees subscribe to my tweets using their regular SMS or text messaging services,” Kariuki said by phone from the town. “It has not only saved on the cost of fliers, it has also allowed us to save trees and contribute to green efforts.”

Subscribers get his tweets in real time in the form of free text messages, and don’t need to have a Twitter account or an Internet connection to receive them. The chief can send them any time using his smart phone.

“It’s all about empowering the local person on the ground with information,” Kariuki said by phone. “Before I decided on this, I asked around — how can I reach all my people in one time at no cost to them?”

Kariuki leads a community of 28,000 residents and while his Twitter account shows he has about 400 followers — or people who get his tweets online — the chief said those who receive his tweets via text message are in the thousands.

“They just don’t register as followers because they don’t have Twitter accounts,” he said. “A lot of people in town get the text tweets, even the thieves and police.”

The chief’s use of social media allows him to reach everyone at the same time, and residents say the effort is paying off.

“He has really helped us know what’s going on around us. Now we know to expect a message from the chief any time, so we don’t turn off our phones at night,” said Jane Wangari, who lives in the town.

In addition to rallying the community, the chief also uses social media to share doses of encouragement and send out alerts about missing animals.

“There’s a donkey that’s been tied under a tree for days, we don’t know its owner, help please,” he tweeted recently after a message about a missing sheep that was later found.

A recent study shows social media use in the continent is growing, with South Africa sending the most tweets, followed by Kenya and Nigeria. Egypt and Morocco follow in the list of top five most active countries.

The report this month by Portland Communications and the trend-analysis group Tweetminster based its conclusion on a three-month study of tweets from the continent.

About 57% of tweets from Africa are sent from mobile devices, according to the study.

“We saw the pivotal role of Twitter in the events in North Africa last year, but it is clear that Africa’s Twitter revolution is really just beginning,” Beatrice Karanja, head of Portland Nairobi, said in a statement. “Twitter is helping Africa and Africans to connect in new ways and swap information and views. And for Africa — as for the rest of the world — that can only be good.”

During the study, South Africa — the leading country in the study — sent about 5 million tweets, nearly twice as many as second-place Kenya.

(CNN) — He was named the most promising player in men’s tennis for 2011, and Milos Raonic’s early form this year indicates that more accolades will be coming his way in the near future.

On Sunday, the ATP Tour’s Newcomer of the Year became the first man to win two titles in 2012 as he successfully defended his SAP Open title in San Jose.

The win was poignant for the Yugoslavia-born Canadian, who claimed his breakthrough win at the same tournament 12 months ago.

“I feel like I’m a much better tennis player than I was last year,” the 21-year-old told the ATP website after his 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 victory over Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin in the final. “I feel last year I was sort of playing probably higher than my potential.

“This year, I felt like I came in a much better player and I played well. First of all, it’s great to win it the first time. But coming back and being able to defend it means so much as well.”

The world No. 35 added to his impressive win at January’s Chennai Open in India, where he became the first player to win a tournament without dropping serve since 16-time grand slam winner Roger Federer in 2008.

Raonic’s booming serve was again impressive throughout the San Jose hard-court tournament as the third seed smashed 61 aces, won 86% of points on his first serve and held 41 of 42 service games.

“I won just four points on his serve, which makes it very difficult to win the match,” said unseeded Istomin, who is still searching for his maiden title.

“I knew he was a great server and a good player. It’s very difficult to return,”

Raonic concurred with his opponent: “I think I served pretty flawlessly throughout the week.”

(CNN) — For a woman whose country is on the brink of financial collapse, Greek teacher Julie Koukliati is surprisingly cheerful.

“You only hear bad things about Europe and Greece but people there still have hope,” she said. “They are still falling in love, going on vacation, they are getting on with their lives.”

Koukliati is quick to add, however, that many of her friends and family are inquiring about South Africa, where three weeks ago she started a new job teaching Greek at a private school in the city of Pretoria.

Koukliati is in South Africa as part of an initiative by the education ministry in her country to teach the Greek language to expats living abroad. However, the program has been drastically reduced as Greece tries to cut back on spending. Over 2,000 teachers were sent overseas in 2009, and last year the number was cut down to 1,430. The teachers pay for their own travel and relocation but continue to receive a salary from the Greek government.

Teachers’ salaries have recently been cut by the Greek government, and Koukliati says she now earns 200 euros less than she did two years ago. She’s expecting another cut soon as her government explores more ways of saving money. Working in South Africa, however, will cushion that blow.

“The truth is I get two salaries now,” she told CNN. “One from Greece and one from here.”

Apart from the primary school where she goes in the morning, Koukliati teaches older kids at a Greek community center. She told CNN: “The community here asked the ministry of education back home to take care of this part of Greece which is in South Africa, and it’s a strong part.”

Up to 50,000 Greeks live in South Africa, according to the Consulate General of Greece in Johannesburg. Community organizations have told CNN that they are receiving more job applications from electricians and artists desperate to escape the tough economic conditions in Greece.

When asked how she feels about the fact Greek teachers are losing their jobs back home while she is paid to teach foreigners, Koukliati insists she’s still serving her country. She said of her students: “Their roots are in Greece. Their parents and grandparents don’t want them to lose their roots. In their hearts and their parents’ hearts Greece is always there. So I’m still working for Greece, that’s for sure.”

The number of Greeks living in South Africa has dropped sharply in the past decade. A report by the General Secretariat of Greeks abroad estimated that 100,000 expats lived in South Africa in 2004 — roughly twice the number living there today.

South Africa has its own unemployment problems, but a deficit in specialized skills could see the once dwindling Greek community burgeon again.

(CNN) — Armed with big grins and risque humor, South African standup comedians Nik Rabinowitz and Tats Nkonzo take to the stage at Cape Town’s Baxter Theater.

“We would like to dedicate this song to all the black people in the audience — I can only see one,” says Rabinowitz. “I see three of us tonight,” quickly adds Nkonzo, with the audience bursting into laughter.

Over the next hour, the two South African comedians — one white, one black — will deliver their own brand of comedy, using an arsenal of jokes to stir up stigmas and stereotypes in a nation striving to come to terms with its racist past.

“In this country a lot of us do use comedy to confront various things and challenge certain ideas and it is just the tip of the iceberg,” award-winning Rabinowitz said before the show.

“We do need to poke our fingers in certain places and say, ‘well, this is still going on,’ and I think particularly around Africa we need to do that — and we do,” he added.

“I had to sit down and go how do I say what I want to say, so then that’s how the music thing came and then I go on the whole spiel about they don’t have any love songs to sing to their wives and then people laugh — I win, they win.

“You know this song; you’re like a dream come true, just want to be with you, you know it’s plain to see, that you’re the one for me … four… five, if ever your work is done, then I’ll get another one.”

Hong Kong (CNN) — Australian airline Qantas is shedding another 500 jobs as it seeks to cut costs after a massive fall in net profit in the first half of the financial year.

Net profit dived 83% to $45 million (A$42M) in the six months to December due to rising fuel prices and flight cancellations during an industrial dispute in October.

Chief executive Alan Joyce talked up the results, saying the airline’s portfolio of businesses had once again shown “resilience in difficult conditions.”

“Improvements in operating cash flow, revenue, yield and unit costs, and record results for Jetstar and Qantas Frequent Flyer, helped offset the financial effect on the Group,” he said.

Jetstar, the company’s low-cost carrier, set a new record for operating earnings before interest and tax of $147 million, up 4% on the previous period. And despite flight disruptions, the airline now counts 8.3 million frequent fliers who are also contributing to profits.

The airline’s shares rose in Sydney as investors signaled their approval of the company’s plans to slash capital expenditure by $700 million over the next two financial years.

The carrier announced that it was reviewing its maintenance facilities in Australia and consolidating its catering and engineering operations.

Joyce conceded that the airline had been hit hard by industrial action, however he said that the airline’s brand and customer satisfaction ratings had improved “signficantly” since the grounding. At the time, thousands of passengers were stranded at airports around the world after Qantas ordered the grounding of 447 flights.

The labor relations tribunal Fair Work Australia stepped in at the behest of the government and ordered an end to the two-day dispute to avoid damage to the tourism industry.

The grounding was a flashpoint in a long-term battle between Qantas and unions representing pilots and engineers working for the Australian domestic and international airline.

Union officials have accused the airline of planning to outsource ground jobs at a cost of thousands of Australian jobs and of putting profits first. Pay and working conditions have also been at the center of the dispute.

Qantas, which has its headquarters in Sydney, is the second-oldest airline in the world and marked its 90th anniversary last year.

It employs about 32,500 people and flies to more than 180 destinations worldwide, according to the company website.

(CNN) — Officials with the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency begin a second round of talks Monday with Iranian officials over the country’s nuclear program, a day after Tehran cut off crude exports to British and French companies in retaliation for a new round of sanctions imposed on the regime.

The two days of talks come amid heightened tensions in the region, with Israel making clear it is pondering an attack on Tehran’s nuclear infrastructure, while Iran warned it could cut off the narrow strait through which oil tankers sail in and out of the gulf.

The scheduled talks between the International Atomic Energy Agency and Iranian officials are billed as an opportunity for the watchdog agency to clarify the “possible military dimensions to Iran’s nuclear program,” the group said.

Iran says it is producing enriched uranium to fuel civilian power plants and has refused international demands to halt its production.

But the IAEA reported in November that it had information to suggest Iran had carried out some weapons-related research.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said it is up to Iran to disprove the allegation.

“The Agency is committed to intensifying dialogue. It remains essential to make progress on substantive issues,” IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano said in statement following the first round of talks in January.

The talks in Tehran follow an announcement Sunday by Iran’s oil ministry that it was halting crude exports to French and British companies, an order that followed a threat that Iran would cut oil exports to some European Union countries in retaliation for sanctions put in place last month by the EU and the United States.

“Iran has no difficulty in selling and exporting its crude oil. … We have our own customers and have designated alternatives for our oil sales. We shall sell to new customers, who will replace French and UK companies,” ministry spokesman Ali Reza Nikzad-Rahbar said in a statement.

The sanctions put in place last month are meant to force Iran to provide more information on its nuclear program by shutting off its sale of crude oil, which generates half of Iran’s revenue.

Iran exports 2.2 million barrels of oil a day, 18% of which is bound for European markets, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The world consumes about 89 million barrels of oil per day.

U.S. and European sanctions are already squeezing Iran’s economy, driving down its currency and driving up consumer prices.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak has called for still-tougher sanction, saying that accelerating the pace of sanctions would force Tehran to return to nuclear talks.

Iran proposed a resumption of those stalled talks last week. U.S. and European diplomats were still trying to gauge the sincerity of the Iranian offer, but U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called it “an important step.”

Meanwhile, Israel has made that it considers a nuclear-armed Iran an existential threat, and has made clear it is considering an attack on Tehran’s nuclear infrastructure.

The United States believes talk of military strikes against Iran’s nuclear program is “premature” and has advised Israel that an attack would be counterproductive, Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Sunday on CNN’s “Fareed Zakaria GPS.”

Dempsey said U.S. officials aren’t convinced Iran has decided to pursue nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, economic and diplomatic sanctions appear to be taking a toll on the Islamic republic, he said.

“On that basis, I think it would be premature to exclusively decide that the time for a military option was upon us,” Dempsey said.

Dempsey said American officials believe an Israeli strike would delay Iran’s nuclear development “probably for a couple of years, but some of the targets are probably beyond their reach.” He said he and others have had “a very candid, collaborative conversation” with the Israelis about the issue.

“I’m confident that they understand our concerns, that a strike at this time would be destabilizing and wouldn’t achieve their long-term objectives,” he said. “But, I mean, I also understand that Israel has national interests that are unique to them. And, of course, they consider Iran to be an existential threat in a way that we have not concluded that Iran is an existential threat.”

Tensions between Iran and Israel have been further heightened in recent days with two Iranian warships sailing through Egypt’s Suez Canal into the Mediterranean Sea.

It’s only the second time such ships have crossed through the Suez Canal since Iran’s 1979 revolution.

“As the Navy affected the region with its presence in the Mediterranean Sea last year, the Navy’s 18th fleet will in the best way carry the message of peace and friendship to regional countries, and display the might of the country and the sacred system of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” said Rear Adm. Habibollah Sayyari, Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency reported.

It was not clear from the report where the two vessels, a destroyer and a supply ship, were headed. However, another semi-official Iranian news agency, ISNA, said the ships were on their way to Syria.

The former world No. 1 has announced he will play three PGA Tour events in the next month, including the Honda Classic in Florida for the first time in his professional career.

The tournament is held in Palm Beach Gardens, which is near the 14-time major champion’s home on Jupiter Island — where he moved last year after his 2010 breakup with ex-wife Elin Nordegren following the scandal about his extramarital affairs.

“I’ve heard great things about the Honda Classic,” Woods told his website. “Now that I live there, I want to play whenever possible.”

He missed the cut as a 17-year-old amateur in 1993 when the tournament — which since 2007 has benefited the children’s charity of golf legend Jack Nicklaus — was played at the Weston Hills course.

“Jack’s involvement in the tournament and the benefits to the local community are also important,” Woods said of the March 1-4 event.

Its current venue, the PGA National, is rated as one of the toughest courses on the U.S. circuit.

“We obviously are thrilled to have Tiger Woods play,” tournament director Ken Kennerly told the tour’s website. “We have worked hard for five years to make this one of the premier events on the PGA Tour.

“This is a testament to where the tournament has come, and a testament to Honda’s 31 years as the longest-standing sponsor on the PGA Tour.”

World No. 18 Woods, who slipped out of the top 50 last year, will also line up at next week’s WGC Accenture Match Play Championship in Arizona next week — an event he has won three times.

After the Honda Classic, Woods will stay in Florida for the WGC Cadillac Championship a week later, where he has tasted victory on a record eight occasions.

(CNN) — Golf returns to Olympics in 2016 after a 112-year hiatus and some of the greatest names in the sport are battling to put their name to the new course on which the event is to be played.

18-time majors winner Jack Nicklaus, South Africa’s Gary Player and Australia’s Greg Norman are well past their playing primes but the three legends are among eight finalists in the running to design the 18-hole course on which the Olympic golf tournament will be played in Rio de Janeiro in four years time.

Gary Player Design, Greg Norman Golf Course Design and Nicklaus Design join Hawtree Ltd., Hanse Golf Design, Renaissance Golf, Robert Trent Jones II and Thomson-Perret Golf Course Architects in the competition to design the course that will be built in the Barra da Tijuca area of Rio, the part of the city that will host the largest number of Olympic venues.

The winner was scheduled to be announced by Rio Games organizers Friday.

In soliciting bids for the course, Olympic organizers stipulated that it be available as a place for the public to play once the games end.

“After the Games, the course will be managed by a private operator with the chief purpose of promoting golf in Brazil and South America, representing one of the most important Games’ legacies for sport development in the country,” organizers said.

For a nation of more than 200 million, Brazil has about 100 golf courses, many of those only nine holes. In contrast, South Carolina has more than four times that many courses with a population that’s just 2% of Brazil’s.

Nicklaus said the Olympic course can build golf in Brazil and across much of the world.

“I think the Olympics is the greatest thing that could happen to golf on an international basis,” the American said in 2010, because it means governments will support the game by building courses that young people have access to, and some of those young people will turn to golf in search of glory.

“All the other parts of the world, if you look at the kids when they grow up, they don’t know about the Masters or the British Open or the PGA. They know about a gold medal. And the gold medal is the best you can get in a sport,” Nicklaus said.

“We have one chance for golf as an Olympic sport to stay in the Olympics. … So we’ve got to put our best foot forward. We’ve got to get the best golf course.”

In an interview with the Golf Channel, Norman emphasized the big responsibility taken on by whoever gets the Rio contract.

“Whoever gets the golf course design job, they have to be the spokesperson for golf in the Olympics, because golf is only in for 2016. It hasn’t been voted in for 2020.

“So whoever gets the job has to be beating the drum for the game of golf for the IOC for four years after that. They have to be a staunch proponent of the game of golf,” Norman said.

And Norman echoed Nicklaus on the accessibility of the course.

“It has to be a course built for the general public at the end of the day. It can’t be a private golf club,” Norman said.

On his website, Player said he sees the Olympic course as an opportunity to grow the game around the world.

“The Olympics will expose millions of people in non-traditional golf markets to the game, and that is great for the sport,” Player said. “This facility can, and should be, a catalyst for golf in Brazil long after the Olympic competition is complete.”

Whichever group wins the Olympic bid, Norman says, they won’t be doing it to make money. And that’s true. Organizers will pay $300,000 for the course design.

Golf was last an Olympic event at the 1904 games in St. Louis, with Canada’s George Lyon winning the gold medal. Golf was also played at the 1900 Games in Paris.

There was no women’s competition in golf in those games, but there will be in Rio.

When making a pitch to Olympic organizers to include golf for 2016, a younger LPGA star, Hawaii’s Michelle Wie, emphasized what it could mean to kids.

“For so many boys and girls around the world, their heroes have been Olympic athletes. Until today, I never thought there was any chance that I could share in that dream,” Wie said.

(CNN) — The secret to Phil Mickelson’s recent successes against longtime rival Tiger Woods could lie with the man who has coached both golf superstars — Butch Harmon.

Harmon helped Woods to eight of his 14 major triumphs between 1993 and 2004, and started working with Mickelson three years later.

He was on hand to give the veteran left-hander tips during the pair’s final-round showdown at Pebble Beach on Sunday.

Mickelson bettered his fellow American for the fifth time in a row when they have played together on the last day of a tournament to clinch his 40th PGA Tour title.

Harmon, who has also worked with other top names such as former major champions Greg Norman and Fred Couples, has revealed how he gave Mickelson an insight into what to expect from former world No. 1 Woods.

(CNN) — Tiger Woods is looking to the familiarity of home as he continues his search for a first full-field tournament win in over two years.

The former world No. 1 has announced he will play three PGA Tour events in the next month, including the Honda Classic in Florida for the first time in his professional career.

The tournament is held in Palm Beach Gardens, which is near the 14-time major champion’s home on Jupiter Island — where he moved last year after his 2010 breakup with ex-wife Elin Nordegren following the scandal about his extramarital affairs.

“I’ve heard great things about the Honda Classic,” Woods told his website. “Now that I live there, I want to play whenever possible.”

He missed the cut as a 17-year-old amateur in 1993 when the tournament — which since 2007 has benefited the children’s charity of golf legend Jack Nicklaus — was played at the Weston Hills course.

“Jack’s involvement in the tournament and the benefits to the local community are also important,” Woods said of the March 1-4 event.

Its current venue, the PGA National, is rated as one of the toughest courses on the U.S. circuit.

“We obviously are thrilled to have Tiger Woods play,” tournament director Ken Kennerly told the tour’s website. “We have worked hard for five years to make this one of the premier events on the PGA Tour.

“This is a testament to where the tournament has come, and a testament to Honda’s 31 years as the longest-standing sponsor on the PGA Tour.”

World No. 18 Woods, who slipped out of the top 50 last year, will also line up at next week’s WGC Accenture Match Play Championship in Arizona next week — an event he has won three times.

After the Honda Classic, Woods will stay in Florida for the WGC Cadillac Championship a week later, where he has tasted victory on a record eight occasions.

Woods will be in illustrious company at Doral, with world No. 1 Luke Donald and 2011 U.S. Open winner Rory McIlroy both confirming their attendance on Tuesday.

The American has shown signs of returning to form in recent times, finishing tied for third at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship last month and winning the Chevron World Challenge event he hosts in December.

“I’m excited about my start and look forward to keep building,” said the 36-year-old, whose last tour-sanctioned win was in Australia in November 2009.

“I’ve made great strides from last year and hopefully all my hard work will pay off with a victory soon.”

But it isn’t her fame that will be most celebrated at the invitation-only funeral beginning at noon, said family friend and Pastor Marvin Winans.

Instead, the message to the 1,500 mourners expected to fill the red-brick church — and the millions more watching on television or online — will be reminiscent of words from Paul the Apostle.

“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”

For a few hours Saturday, the story won’t be about Houston’s reported drinking days before she died or about the prescription pills being tested as investigators seek a cause of her still-unexplained death a week ago at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.

In Newark, 2,700 miles away from Los Angeles, they will remember the 11-year-old girl nicknamed “Nippy,” who followed in the footsteps of her mother, Cissy, by singing in the junior gospel choir. They will remember Houston the superstar, returning for Easter Sunday services, never losing her roots after making it big.

They will remember, through tears and joy, that incredible voice.

Houston’s family will be comforted by neighbors and fellow church members in what the family is calling a “home going” service, according to the funeral invitation that features a photo of a smiling Houston.

Still, the singer’s death at age 48, after a much-publicized struggle with addiction and a tumultuous marriage to R&B bad boy Bobby Brown, has raised questions about fame and the fragility of life — finding meaning in the unexpected loss of such a talented individual.

In the words of Winans, who will deliver the eulogy, “Faith plays a great part in how we cope with uncertainties in life. It is not something that we run from in difficulty, it is something we run to.”

That belief in God, and tradition, will permeate Saturday’s service.

Friday night, Franklin paid tribute to Houston at a Radio City Music Hall concert in New York.

“We will always remember her kindness, her grace, her smile and her dynamic performances. But she’s moved on up just a little bit higher now, and we don’t wonder where she is,” said Franklin.

The Houston family opted to forgo a public memorial service.

They didn’t “want to have a parade,” Winans told CNN’s Anderson Cooper. Their message, he said: “We want to do this with dignity.”

There will not be a customary funeral procession, Newark police Director Samuel DiMaio said Thursday. Houston’s family and her body will arrive at an undisclosed time, he said.

“I would advise the public that there really is going to be nothing to see here at the church,” DiMaio said. “The best thing to do would be to stay home and watch the service on television. …. The funeral is not going to be the traditional procession that we would normally have.”

A perimeter has been set up for four blocks in two directions, and two blocks in the other directions, DiMaio said. The closest the public will be able to get is a staging area two blocks away.

Houston leaves behind an 18-year-old daughter, Bobbi Christina Brown; her mother, Cissy; brothers; a cousin; and a host of relatives and friends.

Cissy Houston and Bobbi Christina attended a private viewing Friday, accompanied by producer Clive Davis, a longtime mentor of the singer.

Born in 1963 in Newark, Houston had musical greatness in her blood.

Cissy Houston is a gospel great and cousin Dionne Warwick was a successful pop singer. Franklin is a close family friend.

After various appearances while a teen and performing backup vocals for Chaka Khan on “I’m Every Woman,” Houston had her big break.

As the story goes, Davis spotted Houston in 1983 in a New York nightclub performing and signed her on the spot. Houston released her debut album, “Whitney Houston,” in February 1985 to wide acclaim.

A generation danced their way through the 1980s to a string of her hits, including the poppy “How Will I Know,” “Saving All My Love For You,” “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and “The Greatest Love Of All.”

Her rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” at the 1991 Super Bowl and “I Will Always Love You” in the movie “The Bodyguard,” in which she made her acting debut, cemented her superstar status.

But by the time the movie opened, Houston’s clean-cut pop image had begun to tarnish with her marriage to Bobby Brown. The two met in 1989 and married three years later.

Their relationship became tabloid fodder, with every misstep chronicled and the couple’s relationship a subject of constant speculation. Brown’s notorious hard-partying led him to several run-ins with the law and stints in jail.

While Houston managed to maintain a successful music and movie career through the end of the 1990s, starring in “The Preacher’s Wife” and “Waiting To Exhale,” her behavior turned increasingly erratic amid reports of heavy drug use.

By the 2000s, her career was in free fall as her album sales dropped off and her voice began to show signs of wear. She and Brown divorced in 2007.

Recently, Houston was working to turn around her career — and image — with a star turn in the upcoming movie “Sparkle,” the remake of a 1976 film that is said to be loosely inspired by the Supremes.

Pastor Winans’ brother, Benjamin “BeBe” Winans, said his sister, CeCe, will perform “Don’t Cry for Me” at Saturday’s service.

Houston performed the song in many countries, Winans told A.J. Hammer of HLN’s “Showbiz Tonight.”

The song is about life, loss and hope.

(CNN) — The CNN-sponsored Caterham Formula One team have recruited Russian driver Vitaly Petrov in place of Italian veteran Jarno Trulli for the 2012 season.

Petrov, who became his country’s first F1 driver when he signed with Renault in 2010, will partner Finn Heikki Kovalainen when the new season gets under way in Australia next month.

The decision to replace Trulli, who has started 256 grand prix’s over 17 seasons, means there will be no Italian driver on the grid in 2012 for the first time in 43 years.

“This is a very exciting day for me,” the 27-year-old Petrov said in a Caterham statement.

“The passion and spirit that (team principal) Tony Fernandes and the whole team have to keep moving forwards is infectious.

“I am honoured to be able to join them and play my part in helping the team mount a serious challenge to the teams ahead in 2012 and for many seasons to come.”

Petrov finished last year 10th in the drivers’ standings and achieved a third-place place finish at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

He will drive for his new team for the first time at the second official preseason test event in Barcelona next week.

Fernandes, who is also the majority shareholder of English football club Queens Park Rangers, was excited to welcome Petrov to the team.

“When we first met it was immediately clear that Vitaly understands and shares our vision for how we want our team to grow,” he said.

“As the first Russian to race in F1 he carries the hopes of a huge nation with ease and his talents, experience with one of our current competitors and insights on and off track will play a huge role in our development as we fight to join the established teams ahead.”

Fernandes also took the time to thank Trulli for his service to Caterham — who had previously raced under the historic Lotus name.

“I also want to take this opportunity to thank Jarno for the absolutely pivotal role he played in the formation and progression of our team since he joined us in December 2009.

“Jarno knew that when he joined us it would be a very different environment to where he had been before, and when we gave him the package he wanted he absolutely shone.”

The 37-year-old Trulli, who has also raced for Toyota and Renault since entering the sport in 1997, took the time to lend his encouragement to Caterham ahead of the new season getting under way in on March 18.

“I’m really proud to have been part of it,” he said. “I understand the decision the team has made and I want to wish to the whole team the very best of luck for the season ahead.”

Washington (CNN) — A 29-year-old man from Morocco was arrested Friday and charged with attempting to bomb the U.S. Capitol building in a suicide attack, authorities said.

Suspect Amine El Khalifi made an initial appearance in court and, if convicted, faces a maximum penalty of life in prison, according to the Justice Department.

He allegedly went to a parking garage near the Capitol on Friday and received what he thought was a vest with explosives and a firearm, both of which had been rendered inoperable by law enforcement. He was arrested before leaving the garage.

“Today’s case underscores the continuing threat we face from homegrown violent extremists,” said Assistant Attorney General for National Security Lisa Monaco. “Thanks to a coordinated law enforcement effort, El Khalifi’s alleged plot was thwarted before anyone was harmed.”

The suspect was charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction against government property. Authorities say the public was never in any danger.

As news of the arrest broke, the Senate had just wrapped up voting on a payroll tax cut extension deal. The House of Representatives had already voted on the deal and members had left, or were leaving. Tourists were also at the Capitol, as is usual.

During his initial court appearance, El Khalifi wore blue pants and a green T-shirt with the words “Ready in Season” on the back. He had short black hair, a trimmed, thin beard and tattoos on his inner arm. He stood straight, showed no emotion and did not speak.

A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for Wednesday.

The suspect, an immigrant from Morocco, is in the United States illegally. He had been closely monitored as part of a lengthy and extensive undercover operation, police said, adding that U.S. Capitol Police had been “intimately” involved in the investigation.

The suspect entered the United States in June 1999 on a B2 visa — which allows for trips for pleasure, tourism or medical treatment, according to an FBI affidavit. His visa expired that same year and he has been living in the United States illegally ever since.

In January 2011, a confidential source reported to the FBI that El Khalifi met with other individuals at a residence in Arlington, Virginia. A person there produced what appeared to be weapons and El Khalifi “expressed agreement with a statement by this individual that the ‘war on terrorism’ was a ‘war on Muslim,’ and said that the group needed to be ready for war,” the affidavit read.

At another point, El Khalifi allegedly said he would “be happy killing 30 people,” it said.

One law enforcement official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told CNN that authorities are searching two locations in Virginia in connection to the investigation — one in Arlington, the other in Alexandria.

A second law enforcement official said El Khalifi is not connected to a terrorist organization and was acting alone.

El Khalifi thought he had met al Qaeda members who would assist him, but in fact he was dealing with undercover FBI agents, said the second source, who declined to say whether the FBI has audio or video recordings of the suspect talking to undercover agents about his plans.

A third source briefed on the matter said the suspect was identified through an existing criminal, not terrorism investigation. When asked about possible entrapment, the U.S. government source said the suspect went out on his own to buy component pieces for an improvised explosive device.

After news of the arrest broke, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor hailed the work of the FBI and the U.S. Capitol Police in thwarting the alleged attack.

“These brave members of our law enforcement community make daily sacrifices in their work to keep us safe and deserve tremendous credit for their efforts leading up to today’s successful sting,” he said.

President Barack Obama was informed on Thursday about the FBI’s plan to arrest El Khalifi, a White House spokesman said.

Top congressional leaders were also briefed on the arrest and operation, a congressional source said, though it was not clear exactly when.

Unlike some other recent attacks on the Capitol, Friday’s alleged suicide plot involved a suspect willing to kill himself.

In September last year, a federal grand jury indicted a man for allegedly plotting to use large remote-controlled model airplanes filled with explosives to attack the Capitol and the Pentagon.

A man was arrested in September 2008 two blocks from the Capitol after an officer spotted a rifle in his car.

And in July 1998, a gunman fired shots in the Capitol building, killing two U.S. Capitol Police officers.

What if Larry, who is black, takes your criticism the wrong way or, worse, thinks you are racist?

The last thing you want is for others to think your actions were influenced by race. So you’ve held off talking to him about performance issues that you’d likely have raised with your non-minority employees. You’re relieved that a potentially thorny situation was averted, even pleased with your capacity to be so racially sensitive.

But in fact, recent research suggests, you have not done your company, your employee, or yourself much good. However well-intentioned, striving to create the appearance of colorblindness by sidestepping the specter of race can be more of an obstacle than an asset to good management practice.

(CNN) — Formula One’s governing body has outlawed a technological development which would help teams improve the stability and aerodynamics of a car.

The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) took the decision to ban reactive ride-height systems for the 2012 season, with teams such as Ferrari, Mercedes, Williams and Lotus thought to be developing their own versions of the innovation.

F1′s official website reported on Monday that the FIA informed the 12 teams of its decision to ban the technology — which helps stop the car dipping closer to the track under the pressure of braking — last week.

Lotus’ system first came to light at November’s young driver test event, with the FIA initially approving the technology as it did not involve the direct input of the driver.

“We have been investigating that type of system for a while,” Williams’ chief operations engineer Mark Gillan told the Flying Lap webcast.

“It obviously has an impact on the aero platform of the car. Anything that gets the front ride height lower is beneficial from an aerodynamic perspective.”

Elsewhere, 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen drove an F1 car for the first time since 2009 at a private test event in Valencia, Spain on Monday.

The Finn had his first taste of driving for the rebranded Lotus team, formerly Renault, in their 2010 car.

Raikkonen won the drivers’ championship with Ferrari five years ago, having also raced for the British marque McLaren and Switzerland-based Sauber.

The 32-year-old raced in the World Rally Championship and NASCAR during his time away from F1.

Raikkonen will take to the grid for the first time since the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in November 2009 when the 2012 season begins in Australia on March 18.

(CNN) — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Friday vetoed a bill that would allow same-sex couples to wed, setting up a confrontation with a Democrat-controlled legislature that has vowed to eventually get the bill into law.

The General Assembly on Thursday passed the measure, which the Senate had approved Monday.

Lawmakers have until the legislative session ends in January 2014 to override Christie’s veto. They would need a two-thirds majority in both houses to succeed.

Christie, the subject of speculation as a possible GOP vice presidential candidate, has said the issue “should not be decided by 121 people in the statehouse in Trenton.”

He has advocated putting the issue to a referendum.

“I continue to encourage the Legislature to trust the people of New Jersey and seek their input by allowing our citizens to vote on a question that represents a profoundly significant societal change,” Christie said in a statement. “I have been just as adamant that same-sex couples in a civil union deserve the very same rights and benefits enjoyed by married couples, as well as the strict enforcement of those rights and benefits.”

Recent polling, meanwhile, suggests that New Jersey voters are slightly in favor of legalizing such marriages.

Fifty-two percent of state voters approve the measure, the first time the figures have crossed the 50% threshold, according to a recent Quinnipiac University poll.

The study includes a margin of error of 2.6 percentage points.

Gay rights groups, which had expected the governor’s veto, have pledged to override it.

“By vetoing the bill that would ensure that all loving, committed New Jersey couples and their families can share in the freedom to marry, with all its protections and meaning, Governor Christie planted his feet firmly on the wrong side of history, said Evan Wolfson, president of the group Freedom to Marry, which had lobbied in favor of the bill.

New Jersey currently allows for civil unions, which Christie says he supports. With Hawaii and Delaware joining the list last month, five other states currently recognize such unions.

A similar battle is also shaping up in Maryland, where Gov. Martin O’Malley — a Democrat — has pushed for his state to join the seven others that allow same-sex couples to marry. On Friday, the Maryland House of Delegates voted 71-67 to legalize same-sex marriage. But no Senate vote has been set, and opponents of the measure have pressed to take the matter to a statewide referendum.

Washington state, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Iowa, New York and the District of Columbia currently allow such marriages.

(CNN) — An Australian man is taking legal against social media giant Twitter after being erroneously accused in a tweet of writing a so-called hate blog.

Lawyers representing Joshua Meggitt filed the defamation notice against Twitter Thursday, seeking damages and the removal of the offending tweets and re-tweets.

Observers say the case could force social media sites to reconsider their future in Australia, or prompt legislators to change the country’s defamation laws.

The original tweet was posted last November by Australian writer and broadcaster Marieke Hardy. It contained a link to Hardy’s blog which accused Meggitt of writing an offensive blog about her. The blog contained a series of personal attacks against Hardy which she reportedly described as “ranting” and “hateful.”

The link was re-tweeted a number of times by some of Hardy’s followers, of which there are now more than 61,000.

Meggitt’s lawyer, Stuart Gibson, described his client as “a music journalist and family man” whose main priority was having the tweets removed.

He says it made no difference that Hardy linked to a blog which made the accusation, rather than explicitly naming Meggitt on her Twitter feed.

“This is a modern day equivalent of standing in front of a billboard and pointing to a defamatory remark,” Gibson told CNN.

Gibson said the two parties had reached an agreement, but declined to confirm press reports that Hardy had paid Meggitt $16,000 (A$15,000) to settle the matter.

Should Meggitt win a defamation suit against Twitter, the payout could be much higher.

Defamation law in the Australian state of Victoria caps damages at $335,000 (A$311,000), although Gibson declined to comment on whether his client would be seeking the maximum amount.

Gibson said his client had not signed up to Twitter, and so had not agreed to its Terms of Service. They state that “under no circumstances will Twitter be liable in any way for any Content, including, but not limited to, any errors or omissions in any Content, or any loss or damage of any kind incurred as a result of the use of any Content posted, emailed, transmitted or otherwise made available via the Services or broadcast elsewhere.”

“What it means is that if you use Twitter and anything defamatory is posted on it then you agree that Twitter is not liable,” Gibson said. “It’s explicitly set out in their terms and conditions. And if you’re not a user, then you’re not bound.”

Peter Black, a senior lecturer at the faculty of law at the Queensland University of Technology, said Meggitt had a reasonable chance of winning his case against the social media company.

“I do think they have a reasonable chance of success. The content itself was clearly defamatory,” he said, adding that it was the first time someone had tested the scope of Australian defamation law by taking on a social media company.

“I think that it’s fair to say we don’t have the same protection given to intermediaries in this country that perhaps you see in the United States,” Black said.

“It is arguable, if not likely, that the limited defenses that we do have don’t extend to those platforms, which would lead to the situation where you do have a site like Twitter or Facebook responsible legally for defamatory comments that their users may post.”

Black said if Twitter was found to be responsible for defamatory material published on its website, it could force social media sites to reconsider their future in the country.

“The amount of content that is generated through these sites means that it’s not practically possible for them to monitor, filter, screen every tweet, every post, every video that gets uploaded onto YouTube,” Black said.

“It could mean pulling out, it could mean introducing some filtering mechanism,” he said, adding that the more likely outcome, should the case succeed, is a change in Australian law to give social media sites greater protection against defamation claims.

“So you either extend the existing immunity that would apply to things like internet service providers to also cover these platforms, or you put in a different framework that would give them immunity as long as they agree to take down comments once they had notice,” Black said.

When contacted by CNN, Twitter refused to comment.

Berlin (CNN) — Germany’s President Christian Wulff announced his resignation Friday following a series of scandals that prompted calls for him to stand down.

The German presidency is a largely ceremonial office, but Wulff’s resignation is seen as a blow to Chancellor Angela Merkel, who supported his candidacy as president.

In a brief televised statement, Merkel said she accepted his resignation with the “utmost respect and deepest personal regret.”

Wulff had put the interests of the general public to the fore in deciding to resign, Merkel said.

In a separate televised statement, Wulff said Germany “needs a president who can devote himself completely to national and international challenges” — and one who commands the trust of a wide majority of citizens.

“The developments of the past days and weeks have shown that this trust and therefore confidence in my ability to serve have been adversely affected,” he said.

“For this reason, it is no longer possible for me to continue in my role as president.”

The scandal involves alleged political favors and financial impropriety while he was state premier of Lower Saxony.

The Hanover prosecutor’s office called Thursday for the government to waive the president’s immunity from prosecution, in light of the evidence it had gathered.

“Following extensive analyses of new documents and the evaluation of further media reports, the Hanover Public Prosecutor’s Office now has sufficient factual evidence and therefore grounds for initial suspicion of receiving bribes or being granted advantages,” it said in a statement.

“(The Office) therefore proposes to the president of the German Parliament that immunity for the federal president be waived.”

The Hanover prosecutors are investigating David Groenewold, a German film producer, alongside Wulff.

Merkel said Wulff’s presidency would be remembered for his efforts to promote a modern, tolerant Germany.

“He gave us important impetus and made it clear that the strength of this country lies in its diversity,” she said.

“With his resignation, President Wulff reiterated his conviction that he always behaved legally correctly in office and in service to the people of our country. I express my utmost respect for this position.”

The members of her governing coalition would now discuss who should stand for election in his place, she said, in consultation with other political parties.

Merkel had been due to meet Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti in Rome to discuss the eurozone crisis but canceled the trip amid the political storm over Wulff, who belongs to her party.

Merkel had no involvement in any of the scandals, but Wulff’s resignation may cause her embarrassment and some collateral damage in political terms, analysts say.

Wulff, who was the state premier of Lower Saxony for seven years, was one of Merkel’s biggest rivals within the Christian Democrats before being elected to the presidency in 2010.

It took three rounds of voting in the Reichstag, or German parliament, before he won enough backing from lawmakers to assume the role.

Wulff was born in Osnabruck, Lower Saxony, in June 1959 and went on to become a lawyer, according to the official website of the presidency.

He first entered local politics as a member of the CDU party in 1986 and was elected to Lower Saxony’s parliament in 1994. He was chosen as state premiere by lawmakers in his party following elections in 2003.

He was the 10th president to serve in the Federal Republic of Germany. He has been married twice and has two children of his own and a stepson.

(CNN) — Joan Smalls was 19 years old when she left her family’s home in the countryside of northern Puerto Rico to pursue dreams of walking the runway.

In just four busy years, she has risen from department store catalog model to the ranks of fashion’s most-sought-after models, walking for the likes of Jason Wu, Donna Karan and Tory Burch at New York’s 2012 Fall Fashion Week.

Along the way, she has broken barriers by becoming the first Latina face of Estee Lauder’s global marketing campaigns in 2011. She has done runway shows in New York, London, Milan, and Paris and graced the pages of British, French, Spanish and U.S. versions of Vogue several times over.

“Joan is a modern beauty with elegance, style and confidence,” said Aerin Lauder, former senior vice president, and current style and image director, of Estee Lauder. “She is the perfect addition to Estee Lauder’s global faces.”

Not bad for someone who used to wear combat boots to casting calls so she could make the trek from Queens to Manhattan.

“I had to take a bus to then take the subway to then go in the city, so I wanted to be as comfortable as possible,” she said. “I think that had a lot to do with it, and especially at the beginning, having to go to 10, 15 castings a day, you want to be as comfortable as possible.”

She began wearing heels full-time when she switched agencies in 2009 and began working with IMG’s Kyle Hager. Within a year, she landed her breakthrough gig in high fashion as the exclusive model for Ricardo Tischi’s Givenchy 2010 Couture Show in January 2010.

“When you want something so bad and when something great happens, I think it’s instinct that you say, this is gonna be the moment that’s gonna change everything. Everybody is gonna see me a different way,” she said. “I thank Kyle every day because he made such a big difference in my career and in my life.”

She’s come a long way before her 23rd birthday, and there’s more on the horizon: She’s the face of the spring/summer 2012 campaigns for Chanel, Lacoste and Calvin Klein Jeans, and work keeps coming in. Amid the glitz and glamour, she counts among her greatest achievements helping change perceptions of beauty in fashion and modeling.

“I just want to continue to break barriers and to show the industry and the world that beauty is diverse, and you don’t have to be a certain stereotype to be beautiful,” she said. “When you look at the world, the world isn’t just one palette. It’s a beautiful rainbow, and why not have someone to represent that rainbow?”

(CNN) — English champions Manchester United prospered in the unfamiliar territory of the Europa League as they beat Dutch giants Ajax 2-0 in Amsterdam in the first leg of their last-32 tie.

Goals from England winger Ashley Young and Mexico striker Javier Hernandez sealed victory for United, to mark their first ever game in the recently revamped second tier competition after they were knocked out of the European Champions League.

United, who are currently second in the English Premier League behind rivals Manchester City, are now firmly in the driving seat ahead of next week’s second leg at Old Trafford.

“I’m delighted with the scoreline,” United manager Alex Ferguson told reporters, who has led his side to two Champions League titles during his 25-year tenure at the club.

“It gives us a good opportunity. We’re not taking anything for granted but at home, at Old Trafford — we’ve now got a good opportunity to get through.”

Young, playing only his second game after a six-week injury lay-off, grabbed the first when he collected Nani’s cross and cut inside his man to drill the ball into the net.

And late in the game, a United counter attack saw Hernandez swap passes with England striker Wayne Rooney, before finishing past Ajax goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer.

Elsewhere, two goals from Colombian striker Falcao handed Spanish club Atletico Madrid a 3-1 win at Lazio, who are currently third in Italy’s Serie A.

Atletico’s compatriots Atheltic Bilbao didn’t fare so well on the road however, losing 2-1 to Lokomotiv Moscow in the Russian capital — goals from Dennis Glushakov and Felipe Caicedo canceling out Iker Munain’s opener.

A late goal from Filipe Andre Santos rescued a 2-2 draw for Portuguese outfit Sporting Lisbon against Legia Warsaw in Poland. Jakub Wawrzyniak and Janusz Gol scored for Legia either side of Daniel Carrico’s strike.

Adam Maher’s goal gave Dutch side AZ Alkmaar a slender advantage to take to Belgium next week as they defeated Anderlecht 1-0.

Ukrainian outfit FC Metalist Kharkiv all but sealed their place in the last 16 with a 4-0 win at SV Salzburg in Austria, Jonathan Cristaldo grabbing two goals.

A goal from Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar secured a 1-1 draw for German side Schalke in their clash with Viktoria Plzen in the Czech Republic.
